SURLYN® Ionomer Resin
SURLYN® is an ionomer resin produced by Dow, made from an ethylene–methacrylic acid copolymer. It is a lightweight, tough, and easily processed thermoplastic. Depending on the metal ions used for neutralization, SURLYN® is available in lithium, sodium, and zinc types, each offering different performance characteristics. In general, SURLYN® provides:
-
Excellent mechanical properties: impact, abrasion, and low-temperature resistance
-
Good gas barrier performance
-
Easy processing: suitable for complex shapes
-
High clarity and good colorability
-
Chemical resistance: resistant to oils and solvents
SURLYN® is widely used in golf balls, sports protection gear, and skateboards due to its toughness and abrasion resistance. Its oil and solvent resistance, along with strong airtightness, make it suitable for perfume caps, cling films, and footwear heel counters. Its light weight and ease of processing also make it useful in foam and cushioning applications.
