SURLYN® Ionomer Resin
SURLYN® is an ionomer resin produced by Dow, made from an ethylene–methacrylic acid copolymer. It is a tough, lightweight, and easily processed thermoplastic. Depending on the neutralizing metal ion, SURLYN® is available in lithium, sodium, and zinc types. In general, it offers:
-
Excellent mechanical properties: impact, abrasion, and low-temperature resistance
-
Good gas barrier performance
-
Easy processing for complex shapes
-
High transparency and good colorability
-
Strong resistance to oils and solvents
SURLYN® is used in golf balls, sports pads, and skateboards for its toughness, and in perfume caps, cling films, and heel counters for its oil resistance and airtightness. Its light weight and easy processing also make it suitable for foam and cushioning applications.
